Cardinals Capers - 29th October

Published Thu 29 Oct 2020

G’day,

Division 1: Venturing down to the Bay is always with some trepidation as you’re never sure how the game will play out against Glenelg, generally one of the sides that give you a run for your money.

Four four innings very little happened with both sides being contained by solid pitching, although we gathered six scattered hits it was not until the fifth the Cardinals got on the board. Lead-off batter Jack Platten laid down a perfect bunt to gain first base. Sean Maple copped a hpb and with two out Mike Bishop added another HR to his season’s tally and drove in the three runs to give us a handy break.

Our fourth run came in the eighth when with two out Nick Carfora doubled into left field and came home on Josh Whelan’s double also to left field. Consecutive errors by the bays in the ninth allowed us to finish with a 5-0 score line

Glenelg could only manage six scattered hits off the Cardinals pitching staff, who were superb.

Our hitters were; Mike Bishop 3 (having a great start to the season) and Josh Whelan coming alive with 3 hits also - great to see; one each to Jack Platten, Sean Maple, Bas Nooij, Wade Chant, Nick Carfora,

Our pitching was assigned to starter Tom Fitzgerald who threw 5.1 innings for 4 hits, 7 strikeouts, 4 walks without giving up a run. Greg Mosel contributed for 2.2 innings for 2 hits, 3 stroikeouts, 1 walk and 0 runs. Jason Lott is working towards his best with 1 innings for 0 hits, 2 strikeouts. 1 walk and 0 runs. It was great to see Tom Fitz showing improvement now that he is getting more mound time. Keep it up Tom.

All in all a satisfying win - our second for the season so far.

Division 2: The team had victor in their grasp at 3-2 coming into the Bay’s last at bat but basic errors cost them the game and they lost 4-3

Division 3: With the game all tied up at 9-9 the boys managed to scramble 2 runs to win the game off the back of some loose pitching by Glenelg and holding them scoreless in their last at bat coming away with a11-9 victory

Division 6: A 5 run first innings set the tone for a solid win over a Goodwood side that had a few known former Division 1 players in their line-up. Solid batting backed up by the pitching of Todd Ruch and Ben Robertson paved the way for a 11-2 win. “Recruits’ Todd and Ben will certainly enhance the ability of the team to push for glory at the end of the season.

Division 7: After a slow start the team is coming together and notched up their first win with a 11-8 win over Goodwood. All players took part in the win. Clay Glen is the BUASA’s latest recruit. Clay plays for our Division 7, then puts his Umpire’s cap on and umpires the Division 6 game afterwards and is doing a great job.

Senior League (U17): The team had a tough time against a solid Goodwood, but battled away, not giving up, and managed two runs in their last at bats before going down 11-2

Minor League (U11): The team had a great battle with East Torrens but could not make up a slow start and lost 10-7

Little League D2 (U13): Stand-in Coach Jenny Barker could not wipe the smile off her face with a resounding 20 -12 win over the Senators. The team scored the maximum 5 rins per innings in all of their four innings. Harry Binns and Paul Bon pitched well.

Little League D2 (U13): The team is putting up good performances and this weekend came away with a solid 16-10 win against Golden Grove.

Junior League Kensington (U15): The boys battled away all game and scored 3 runs in their last at bat to come away with a draw, but could not get the winning run over the plate before finishing at 9-9 against Golden Grove.

Little League Cardinals (U15): Coach Steve Whitehead had a smile on his face after the team’s first win with a solid 13-5 win over a combined Woodville / West Torrens combination. A 7 run fourth innings gave then the upper hand
