Cardinals Capers - 23rd October

Published Fri 23 Oct 2020

Howdy,

Sunday’s game against Port Adelaide would have to be one of the strangest games ever played there - 22 runs scored throughout the game and into the wind - that’s unbelievable.

We were 3 runs up in the top of the fourth with Mike Bishop setting the tone with a HR over the corner of the rightfield fence followed by a run in the third with Bryce Allen on base and batted in by Sean Maple. The third came when Wade Chant singled to leftfield and came home on an error and a wild throw..

Then the unbelievable happened, Port rattled on seven runs, five with two out. All of a sudden we’re chasing four runs to make up the difference.

Then it was the Cardinals turn notching up eight runs by collecting 6 hits and a walk. We added two more in the sixth when Bas Nooij scrambled to first on a passed ball and Austin Gallagher cleared the rightfield fence.

We completed the game with a further two runs when Port ran out of capable pitchers finishing with a !5-7 win.

Our Hitters were Sean Maple, Austin Gallagher, Mike Bishop, Wade Chant, Nick Carfora, Bryce Allen all with two each; Jack Platten 1.

Our starting hurler was Tom Fitzgerald threw 3.1 innings for 5 hits, 4 strikeouts, 5 walks for 7 runs. Greg Mosel completed 3.1 innings for 1 hit, 5 strikeouts, 1 walk, 0 runs. Jason Lott, our ACT recruit threw 1 innings for 0 hits, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, 0 runs. Nick Carfora had 1 innings for 0 hits and 1 strikeout. In fairness to Tom he had a comeback that bounced off his shoulder and hit him in the head. He battled on but it could be seen that it did have some effect on his pitching.

The Division 2, putting up a much improved performance had a good 5-3 win over Port Adelaide. A solid pitching performance by Todd Marshall was helped by having an experienced catcher behind the dish with David Gibbs donning the ‘tools of ignorance’

David and son Kyle played their first official game together with Kyle in the infield at second base. A bit of rivalry ensured as both recorded safe hits. Great to see. May the dynasty continue.

A blast from the past saw Nick Amato return to the game. Nick was a developing Junior when the North Adelaide Football Club took over his life playing a considerable number of games at the SANFL level.

Nick came out to training and showed that after a 10 year absence had lost none of his early ability, being on base a couple of times and taking good catches in the outfield. Welcome back Nick. It’s great to see you in the Cardinal colors again.

Division 3 notched up their second win with a solid 7-2 win over Port.

Other home game results were the Minor League went down to Indians 9-12; Little League D1 had a draw with Hawks; Little League D2 lost to Norths 15-4; Junior League Cardinals went down 14-2 to Adelaide; Division 7 Red were whitewashed by Angels 16-0; Division 6 took care of the Angels winning 11-4; The Senior League boys had a great win over Angels with a13-2 result.

We’re looking to have a great day this Sunday against Glenelg at the Bay at 3.00 pm.

Players! Keep a look out for info re the Players Day at home on the 1st November. It’ll be a great day as usual.

Cheers for now,

Arthur Mac
