Capers

21st October 2021

Brought to you this week by Taylor Collison

Howdy,

We’ve done it again! After knocking off a last year’s finalist in Henley & Grange we stitched up Sturt, the premiership team, 10-3. Another great result for the Cardinals.

It was also another repeat performance by Sean Maple who again went back to back homers in the first and third innings and with Austin Gallagher’s single homer in the third we were 4-0 up.

We continued to keep up the scoring with another three runs in the fourth with doubles from Jordan Spratt, Jack Platten and Kosei Suzuki. Now 7-0!

Singles from Jack Platten and Kosei Suzuki in the sixth produced two more runs. With Austin Gallagher and Mike Bishop on base through walks Jordan Spratt batted in Austin to give the Cardinals their 10 runs.

Sturt did not grace the scoreboard until the fifth when they managed their first safe hit and was batted in by their number 9 batter.

They scored again in the sixth on a change in pitching when their leadoff batter singled followed by a walk and both were batted in by Jackson Brebner-Russ who recorded three of the Sturt’s five safe hits

Our pitching was again led by Greg Mosel who backed up his performance against Henley with another five superb innings giving up 2 hits, striking out 6 batters and allowing only 2 walks. This week Nick Carfora came into the game and put up a solid performance for four innings giving up 3 hits, striking out 2 batters for 1 walk allowed. A good all-round performance by both pitchers against the dominant team of 2020-21.

Our hitters were; Sean Maple 4 (2hr); Kosei Suzuki, Cooper Peacock, Jack Platten 2 each; Nick Platten, Austin Gallagher, Bryce Allen, Jordan Spratt, Josh Whelan 1 each. RBIs came from Sean Maple 3, Kosei Suzuki 2, Nick Platten, Austin Gallagher, Cooper Peacock, Jack Platten 1 each.

Sean’s last two weeks stats are 9 at bats, 6 safe hits (4 hrs), 7 runs batted in,1 hpb, 1 strike out. Just an unbelievable start to the season. Keep it up ‘Foffy’

Other Senior Divisions:

Division 2 battled it out against Sturt but unfortunately lacked the batting to score a victory with Sam Waltham the only batter to get a mention when he doubled to centerfield. The team went down 13 zip to Sturt

Division 3 were trailing 3-1 against Sturt but rallied in their fifth to score 4 runs an run out 5-3 winners.

Division 6 battled away and managed to draw 8-8 with Sturt

Division 7 toughed out against Sturt before going down 6-3

Division 8 after having to forfeit last week pulled a team together, in the main consisting of fathers of our Juniors who were having their first game of baseball, topped up by Tracey Robinson from our Women’s Premiership team. They did themselves proud scoring 11 runs against a more experienced Sturt with the final score Sturt 20, Kensi 11.

The highlight surely was Matt Williamson’s HR over the leftfield fence. Matt, formally a cricketer, took a couple of almighty swings at the first to pitches (way above his head) and on the third, with the pitch certain to hit him in the head, clouted it for a home run. Everyone was excited! Well done Matt. The team really enjoyed themselves and are looking to take on Woodville this coming Saturday

Our Junior Results:

Senior League had a comfortable 6-1 win over Port Adelaide with Sam Waltham in his first stint on the mound showed that he will trouble teams this season. Will Tanner looked the complete pro at shortstop making some unbelievable plays.

Junior League D1 after a shaky first innings settled and easily accounted for Port Adelaide with a comfortable 11-6 win. Jonah Spry was robbed of a Hr due to a questionable umpire decision.

Junior League D2 had a Bye.

Intermediate League toughed it out before going down 11-8 to Goodwood

Little League D1 fought against the odds before going down 19-10 against Port Adelaide

Minor League Kensington recorded a sound 12-6 win against Northern Districts.

Minor League Cardinals were a little outclassed against a more experienced Henley and went down 10-0. You’ll get your chance soon guys.

Our Women’s and Pee Wee teams are yet to start.

There’s plenty of baseball at home this weekend with the Divisions 6 and 7 on Saturday and the Senior League, Junior league D1, Little League D1 and Minor League Cardinals all playing at home on Sunday.

The Divisions 3, 2, 1 all play Woodville at Don Klaebe Reserve, Findon at 11.10, 1.30 and 4.00 pm respectively on Saturday - another big test!
