Cardinals Capers - 19 November

Published Thu 19 Nov 2020

Howdy,

Well, from sitting comfortably in second spot our performance against East Torrens on Sunday saw us slip to 5th on percentage. However, all is not lost, we’ll bounce back. Unfortunately, Covid-19 restrictions will prevent us from training and playing for the next fortnight.

As the temperature was in the high 30s the game was shortened by the heat rule to seven innings or two hours, whichever came up first.

We scored in the first frame when lead-off batter Bryce Allen singled, was pushed around by Bas Nooij’s single and brought in by Austin Gallagher’s double to right field. Bas was sent home but a good throw found him just short of the home plate.

Meanwhile, the Redsox rattled on six runs, picking up 8 hits, a walk and aided by a couple of errors in their first three innings off starting pitcher Tom Fitzgerald before Greg Mosel came in to stem the tide and get the side out. From there they only scored one more run in the sixth.

We were looking down the barrel of a 7-1 defeat. Some life was brought back into the game when in the sixth Jack Platten led off the innings with a long bomb over the left field fence. This brought a pitching change from ET. Greg Mosel drew a walk and Nick Carfora emulated Jack with a blast over the rightfield fence for a two-run HR.

We just run out of gas and could not make up the leeway in the seventh and finally went down 7-4.

Our hitters were Austin Gallagher 2; Bryce Allen, Sean Maple, Bas Nooij, Jack Platten, Josh Whelan, Nick Carfora 1 each. RBIs came from Nick Carfora 2, Austin Gallagher, Jack Platten 1 each.

Pitching was shared by Tom Fitzgerald for 3 innings, 8 hits, 1 strikeout, 1 walk, 6 runs. Followed by Greg Mosel for 3 innings, 3 hits, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, 1 run. Jason Lott finished with 1 innings for 0 hits, ! strikeout, 1 walk, 0 runs.

Division 2 had a breakthrough win overcoming East Torrens with a three-run burst in their fourth to win 3-2 on the back of a solid pitching stint by Todd Marshall. David Gibbs impressed the ump picking up 3 MVP votes - you just can’t beat experience. When asked to bunt David pulled off (not seen too often lately) a great slug bunt to right field.

Division 3 had a bit of a scare when lightning started flashing over the ground and umpire Adrian Frinsdorf had no alternative but to call game. The score was a 2-2 draw. Will Critchley and Tom Bell were given MVP votes.

Division 6 drew 6-6 with Port Adelaide, one of their tougher sides.
Division 7 toughed it out against Port Adelaide going down 6-13. Don Petherick picked up MVP

votes

Women’s League are on a roll (their third straight win), winning 13-6 against Northern Districts. Coach Adrian Gibbs praised their batting with picking up the maximum 5 runs per innings in their first at bat. Tamara Harkin gave her best performance to date on the mound, backed up by Jen Gibbs behind the dish - not letting anything get by (must be a Gibbs trait, this catching). Well done ladies - keep up the good work

Super League (U17): Unfortunately came up against Adelaide’s number 1 side. However they did manage a five-run burst in the fourth before going down 10-5. Pitching was shared by Harry Oates and Sam Waltham. Zeb Chant (our Mt Gambier player) picked up MVP votes

Games Cancelled: Unfortunately, due to the Baseball SA heat rule all junior games on Sunday were cancelled
