Cardinals Capers - 17 March 2022

Published Thu 17 Mar 2022

Howdy.

Division 1 v West Torrens

What an embarrassing game of baseball for the last game of the minor round. Certainly not up to what is expected at Division 1 level with the game being a ‘dead rubber’ and neither side able to improve their position on the premiership ladder.

The Eagles jumped the Cardinals early when 15 batters faced up and 10 runs were scored 7 unearned when we kicked the ball around making 4 errors. A single hr by Austin Gallagher in the third gave the Eagles 11 runs to 2. That put us on the back foot.

We came back a little scoring 3 runs in our next two at bats which included a single hr by

Kosei Suzuki

We stemmed the tide somewhat when Greg Mosel came to the mound in the third. Then with Greg having to leave the game in the sixth conceding just 3 runs the Eagles opened up again and scored a further 8 runs off Austin Gallagher and Mike Bishop.

The Cardinals rallied again when the Eagles made a pitching change, scoring 4 runs in the sixth. Again in the seventh with a further pitching change we added a further 6 runs which included a grand slam hr by Nick Platten.

With the game closing through both sides wanting to protect their pitching staff the game finished

21-13 to the Eagles. Probably, at the end of the day, nothing to really get excited about and one of the most disappointing of games to watch, coming from two top six sides.

Our Hitters were Kosei Suzuki 2, Nick Platten 2, 1 each to Austin Gallagher (hr), Adrian Chenoweth, Riley Moore, Darren Peacock, Nick Carfora, Jack Platten, Bryce Allen

Pitching, Other than Greg Mosel who for 5 innings gave up 5 hits, struck out 9, walked 2 for 3 runs our other pitchers were not up to the mark, with exception of Mike Bishop for I innings

Other Weekend Result

Division 2 bombed out against West Torrens 7-0

Division 3 suffered player shortages and went down 16-5 against West Torrens. Peter Jones, the Division 8’s Champion Batter showed he still had something to offer.

Division 6 toughed it out in their semi-final before going down 9-3 against Goodwood. Unfortunately they were without their strike pitcher in Todd Ruch who was out with Covid.

Women’s League unfortunately lost their semi-final 12-2 against Adelaide

Junior League D1 had a convincing semi-final win over West Torrens winning 12-1 with young Angus Chenoweth making up the numbers due to a shortage of players and the other two side also playing finals

Junior League D2 convincingly beat Golden Grove 16-6 with some good batting.

Intermediate League went down 18-9 against Goodwood.

Minor League Kensi had a narrow 4-2 win over Northern Districts

Minor League Cards unfortunately lost 12-2 to Port Adelaide

The pleasing thing is that four of five junior sides are still alive and will play their prelim finals this Sunday

The Junior League D1 will play Adelaide at home at 1.00 pm. The Junior League D2 will play Goodwood at Mortlock Park at 1.00 pm. The Intermediates will play Adelaide at home at 3.30 pm and The Minor League Kensi will play Henley & Grange at West Lakes at 8.45 am.

We wish them every success and look forward to GFs next weekend

Division 1 will play a best of three against Henley & Grange at Bartley Terrace, West Lakes starting this Saturday at 3.30 pm followed by game two on Sunday at 11.30 am and at 3.00 pm for game three, if necessary - a tough ask these finals. Good luck guys!

In from the USA - Sean Maple

Sean is at Heston Community College, Kansas and after a sizzling start to the Division 1 Baseball SA season Sean continues to ride the hot bat. His first four games he is 4-12 with 2Hr and 10 Rbi. Great stuff! Keep up the good work ‘Foffy’

From the Scrapbook

Something that has never happened in the history of the Kensington Baseball Cub, Mother and Son on the same team sheet.

Tracey was called on to make up the shortage in Division 3 on Saturday. Good stuff Tracey in putting your hand up, especially after playing in the Women’s League on Friday night.

Then to cap off her day there she was behind the barbecue cooking the snags during the Division 1 game.

Truly a club person. Well done. We love you!

Tracey and Jack Robinson
