Cardinals Capers - 17 December

Published Thu 17 Dec 2020

Howdy,

Division 1: Saturday, 12th December 2020 v Goodwood:

Up against one of this year’s contenders in Goodwood we were expecting a tough battle.

The Indians opened their account in the first when an air ball from our shortstop put their batter on second and a two base hit by the following batter gave them the run.

The Cardinals responded immediately from a two-run dinger from Austin Gallagher with Bas Nooij on base from a single. We banged on another three runs in the third when our seventh, eighth and ninth batters in Jack Platten, Josh Whelan and Jack Miller all scored from solid hits.

We added another four runs in the fourth when Josh Whelan and Jack Miller again picked up doubles and with Sean Maple doing the same when Bas Nooij launched a two run bomb over left field. Mike Bishop added another HR to his tally with a solo over the left field fence.

With two runners on via walks Austin Gallagher belted a game ending HR over the right field fence giving the Cardinals their third mercy game in a row.

Goodwood managed two more runs from single HRs thus giving the Cardinals a 13-3 win.

Our Hitters were: Sean Maple, Bas Nooij, Austin Gallagher, Michael Bishop, Jack Platten, Josh Whelan, Jack Miller 2 each, Greg Mosel 1. RBIs came from Austin Gallagher 5 and 2 each from Sean Maple, Bas Nooij, Mike Bishop, Jack Miller

Greg Mosel started and finished the game pitching 7 innings for 6 hits, 4 strike outs, 1 walk with

3 runs scored. Just another complete effort also batting for himself and picking up a safe hit.

Division 1: Tuesday 15th December v Goodwood:

Yep! We were at Mortlock Park on Tuesday to challenge the Indians again (such is the schedule because of Covid-19). However, they turned the tables on us and scored a 2-0 win.

Not much to get excited about, if anything at all, we just could not get on top of their pitcher who dominated or batters with 7 strikeouts. Only two of the Cardinals batters in Sean Maple 2 hits and Josh Whelan 1 hit were the only batters to get a green mark in the scorebook.

We won’t say too much about Austin Gallagher’s head high hpb in his first at bat, except that in my opinion it was a deliberate attempt to try an intimidate Austin having hit 5 hrs in the last three games - 2 against them on Saturday.

Tom Fitzgerald was given the pill and did a solid job in the blusterly conditions with their two runs coming after walking the lead-off batter in the fifth followed by a HR.

A lack of batting by the Cardinals resulted in giving it to the Indians 2-0.
