Capers

14th October 2021

Brought to you this week by Capital United

Howdy,

Well. Who would have thought that we would thump Henley and Grange to the tune of 10-4 in our opening game of the season at home.

They got a shock in our first at bat when our Japanese recruit I Kosei Suzuki, (formerly H&G) as lead-off, watched two over the plate then thumped the next pitch over the centerfield fence for a long home run. Kosei, what a way to start your first at bat with your new Club. This will no doubt be in your highlights real. Mother took a video and sent it back home to the family in Japan.

But that was not all, Austin Gallagher doubled and Mike Bishop followed with a huge HR over left field.- 3-0 up after the first innings.

The third saw the Cardinals add three more runs when Kosei led off the third innings and recorded his second safe hit and Sean Maple added to the HR tally when he launched a two-run HR over the leftfield fence. The next two batters walked and another of our recruits in Jordan Spratt (ex Adelaide) batted in Austin Gallagher - 6-0 up.

The HRs continued in the fourth when with Nick Platten on through a muffed fly Sean Maple repeated his previous at bat with along HR, again over the leftfield fence - now 8-0.

We scored again in the sixth when with Nick Platten on base through a single to center field, Mike Bishop drove him in with a single to leftfield.

In the seventh Jordan Spratt led off with a single to centerfield and was brought home by Jack Platten’s single, also to center field

Henley came back in the sixth with four runs after Greg Mosel our starting pitcher started to tire after pitching five superb complete innings striking out six batters without giving up a walk and allowing only the four runs. Todd Marshall came in for the last four innings and did not allow Henley to add to their total collecting five strikeouts for three hits.

Thus we cleaned Henley up 10-4. A great start to the season, giving the team some confidence going forward. We could not have wished for a better beginning with this young team of enthusiastic ballplayers.

Our Hitters were Jordan Spratt 3, Kosei Suzuki 2 (hr), Sean Maple 2 (2hr), Mike Bishop 2 (hr), Nick Platten, Austin Gallagher, Josh Whelan, Jack Platten 1 each.

Now to take on last season’s premiers in Sturt at home this coming Saturday at 4.00 pm.

The Other Divisions:

Division 2 unfortunately were a little outclassed going down 11-1 to Henley. However it must be remembered this is a very young side that we are developing with some six players still eligible to play Senior League (U17). Topped up with good Division1/2 players.

Division 3 in their first outing had a tussle before going down 5-2 against Henley.

Division 8 unfortunately had to forfeit through a lack of numbers. We’re looking for a few more to top up. Are there any old player that would like to swing the bat again with a group that just want to have some fun and a beer afterwards. Chris Jones would love to hear from you - 0422 745 368. Give him a call

Our Juniors:

Senior League came home with a wet sail in their last at bat and drew with 4-4 with Adelaide

Junior League D1 scored 2 runs in their last to come away 3-2 winners against Adelaide

Little League D1 had a tough one against Adelaide and lost 11-1. Keep your chin up guys

Intermediate League had a good start to the season with a sound win over Souths - 11-6.

Minor League North: The Kensi and the Cards played each other with the Kensi boys scraping home by the odd run - 13-12. Shows that the sides are evenly matched.

The Away Games Results:

Division 6: Henley 8 - Kensington 6

Division 7: Henley 8 - Kensington 3

Junior League D2: Kensington 14 - Adelaide 3. What a great start for debut coach Jack Platten.
