Cardinals Capers - 12 November

Published Thu 12 Nov 2020

G’day,

It was a glorious day at Peregrine Park the home of Southern Districts Baseball Club and with a two run start in our first at bat with Sean Maple and Bas Nooij on base from a single and a double and Austin Gallagher driving in the runs with a double we were looking good.

Well, it didn’t last long the Hawks bounced back with a six-run burst when our starting pitcher Nick Carfora had a huge case of first-game (this season) nerves with their number seven batter finishing their run with a grand slam bomb..

To Nick’s credit he gathered his thoughts and for the next four innings the Hawks were held scoreless with Nick giving up only one safe hit.

The Cardinals bounced back somewhat in the third when with Sean Maple on base via a walk Austin Gallagher belted a two-run homer over the right field fence.

Our fourth innings saw the Cards bang on six runs when Nick Carfora led off with a single, Josh Whelan doubled, Sean Maple doubled, Bas Nooij singled, Austin Gallagher was intentionally walked, Wade Chant singled, Greg Mosel singled and Nick Carfora for the second time singled. Eleven batters faced up with the Hawks giving up 7 hits and an intentional walk to Austin Gallagher (nervous that he was going to launch another bomb).

In the sixth we added another two runs when Bas Nooij drew a walk and Austin Gallagher launched his second homer to give the Cardinals a 12-6 win.

Greg Mosel, who is one of the Cardinals regular pitchers, had the day off and played leftfield and was on base four times picking up two hits and driving in two runs. Who said ‘pitchers can’t bat’? A good effort Greg, hope we get see you do this more often!

Our Hitters were Bas Nooij, Austin Gallagher 3 each; Sean Maple, Wade Chant, Greg Mosel, Nick Carfora 2 each; Josh Whelan 1.

RBIs came from Austin Gallagher 5, Bas Nooij 2, Greg Mosel 2, Sean Maple 1, Nick Carfora 1, Josh Whelan 1.

Pitching was shared with Nick Carfora starting and going five innings for 4 hits, 5 strike outs 1 walk, 3 hpb, 6 runs. Tom Fitzgerald pitched two innings for 0 hits, 4 strikeouts, 3 walks, 0 runs. Jason Lott closed for two innings for 1 hit, 4 strikeouts, 1 walk, 0 runs. A solid workout for the guys.

Division 2 could not get on the board and were outscored 8-0 by Southern Districts

Division 3 were somewhat seriously depleted through lack of their regular players being available and were outscored by the Hawks 8-1. Will Frogley withdrew at the last having to take his wife to hospital for the birth of their second child. Congratulations Will.

Women’s League notched up their second win with a convincing 13 -6 win over Southern Districts. The ladies scored the maximum 5 runs per innings in their first two at bats. All thirteen players took part in the win. They had the pleasure of Senior Division 1 Coach Austin Gallagher as their umpire. Don’t know who was the more nervous, Austin or the Women. Tracey Robinson, Jenny Barker and Tamara Harkin were the MVPs

Division 6 had a resounding 16-6 victory over Golden Grove with Justin Venter, Clay Glen and Michael Oors picking up MVP votes.

Division 7 managed to overcome a slow start batting in 9 runs in their last two at bats to claim a

9-6 win over Golden Grove with Adrian Frinsdorf and Andrew Waltham gaining MVP votes

Senior League (U17) scored runs in every innings to come away with a 9-6 win over a determined Port Adelaide. Ali Tanner and Harry Oates gained MVP votes

Junior League (Kensington) came up against a solid Henley & Grange and could only manage 1 run in a 10-1 defeat. Will Tanner gained a MVP vote.

Junior League (Cardinals) really had a day out against East Torrens with a heavy 21-3 win. No doubt coach Steve Whitehead would have had a big smile having waited for the boys to notch up a great moral boosting win. Koby Whitehead, Ali Tanner and Oscar LeMessurier received MVP votes.

Little League D1: A tough game for these youngsters, coming up against Henley & Grange. But they battled away and scored 3 runs before going down 11-3.

Little League D2 battled away all day and were one run up at the bottom of the fourth, but unfortunately could not match Sturt’s 5 run last at bat and went down 18-14. Harry Binns gained MVP votes.

Minor League: A great effort scoring the maximum 4 runs per innings in three of their four outings and overcoming a determined Indians side, coming away as 12-9 winners. Chris Clayton was awarded a MVP vote.

Pee Wee League: Another good game. The team is learning faster than expected with some great fielding and batting with Liam Harris belting 3 doubles and Alex Camerlengo clubbing a home run in only his second game. They had a convincing win over Port Adelaide.

Next Division 1 Game at Home: Get to the ballpark on Sunday when the Cardinals take on the Red Sox (our traditional enemy). Three games at 10.00, 12.30 and 3.00 for the main game. Two junior sides the Pee Wee League and Little League D2 will be on show on the bottom diamond at 9.00 and 11.00. They would love to see you!

See you at the ballpark. Cheers for now,

Arthur Mac
